Honor the Past – Looking Ahead

If you’ve been to Pie Ranch, you may have seen the historic farmhouse on the “Lower Slice” of land, behind the roadside barn. This house, built by Isaac Steele in 1862, is listed on the national register of historic places. The house, barns, and land are currently owned by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, and Pie Ranch is launching a capital campaign to raise funds to purchase and restore the farmstead. The campaign represents an extraordinary opportunity for Pie Ranch to expand the reach and impact of our highly effective, youth-centered food system education programs, and the house is the cornerstone of the campaign.
Long vacant, the house has seen better days. Recently, however, a generous friend and neighbor, Donna Richeson of Double Dog Ranch in Pescadero, took it upon herself to spruce up the main room of the house. Donna and her crew worked diligently, scraping, painting, cleaning and furnishing the room. The result is a beautiful, cozy space, which invokes the charm and rich history of the home. Visitors and potential funders who tour the house will no doubt be inspired by the great potential it holds to become a fully functional educational space for Pie Ranch’s programs. Once restored, the house will feature classrooms, a library dedicated to sustainable agriculture, a teaching kitchen and conference space for students, colleagues and visitors.
Thank you, Donna, Jesus, Geronimo, Richard, Rich, Carole, Don, Virginia, Dede, Sky and all who helped breath new life into this very special house. Please stop in for a visit and see for yourself!
